Chung Shan Medial University summarizes efficacy of electrolyzed reductive water (alkaline ionized water) by new evidences of “Doctor Water”, Professor Fung-Jou Lu

　　Electrolyzed reductive water which is different from ordinary water contains dissolved alkaline minerals with good ions, for example, calcium, magnesium, potassium or sodium ions to remove deleterious compounds in acid chlorine, sulfuric acid and nitric acid.

　　Professor Fung-Jou Lu, who is known as “Doctor Water”, the incumbent Chair Professor of the Institute of Medicine and the Department of Medical Applied Chemistry, CSMU, and the former head of the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, College of Medicine, NTU, has devoted himself to research of healthy drinking water for years.

　　Professor Lu proved that electrolyzed reductive water, which is characteristic of the controllable Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP) for constant output power in electrolysis and the specific pH value, has the active oxygen resistance activity and the potential of health care for protecting liver, gall and kidney and resisting cancers. That is, electrolyzed reductive water prevents the kidney from nephrotoxicity and injuries induced by Cisplatin, promoting activities of SOD, GSH-PX and GSH-RD in the kidney.

　　Dr. Lu, Fung-Jou, who argued a new theory that humic acid, free radicals existing in wells, rather than arsenic was the source of black foot disease, had drawn literary excellence in the 1970’s and 1980’s. In 1975, Dr. Lu found deleterious humic acid emitting blue-green fluorescence in well water at the southeastern coasts of Taiwan. Hence, Dr. Lu devoted himself to create the best and healthiest water for people and developed the reverse osmosis filtering method in 1978 which drove and prospered the reverse osmosis industry in Taiwan.

　　Dr. Lu’s first scientific work, “Electrolyzed Water is Good Water”, published in 1990 and known as the classics in the drinking water industry locally and methods to test free radicals inside the human body in 1995 explained the mechanism of actions of electrolyzed water in health care questioned by Japanese and drove development of electrolyzed water generators in Japan.

　　As the first advocate of the theorem of “free radicals – the source of disease” in 1990’s, Dr. Lu, who committed himself to research of “water” for a long period, prospered the industry of “RO water” and “electrolyzed reduced water” in Taiwan. In 19995, Dr. Lu’s finding that free radicals in blood of patients suffering from acute pancreatitis were erased by electrolyzed reduced water had attracted attentions of people and was reported by Japanese media.

 

In addition to oxidation resistance and removals of free radicals as well as reactive oxygen species (ROS), electrolyzed reduced water still features the following functions according to findings of Dr. Lu.

1. Protect liver and gallbladder:

   　　In animal experiments for the effect of electrolyzed reduced water on mice’s hepatic injuries induced by carbon tetrachloride, the antioxidant electrolyzed reduced water moderated weight increments of livers and spleens attributed to carbon tetrachloride, alleviated oxidative damage inducing hepatic injuries, and restrained necrocytosis, bile duct proliferation and hepatic fibrosis induced by carbon tetrachloride (Food and Chemical Toxicology, June 2009, 47, 2031-2036).

   　　The hepatic injuries influence metabolism of the human body and functions of organs and even risk the life. The responses of the liver to pathogenic factors are presented in proliferation of parenchymal liver cells and stellate cells, degeneration and necrosis of parenchymal liver cells, and exudation and proliferation of hepatic interstitial tissues. Fibroplasias which results in liver cirrhosis will proliferate in the liver in which some hepatic cells necrotise and other hepatic cells regenerate. Because liver cirrhosis impedes venous blood and causes the high hepatic venous pressure and the high portal venous pressure, the liver cells to which less blood is supplied degenerate or necrotise and aggravate liver fibrosis as well as liver cirrhosis in the vicious circle. When the compensation mechanism is deteriorated significantly due to serious liver injuries, the symptom of serious hepatic dysfunction or insufficiency of liver functions further evolves into hepatic failure which results in central nervous system dysfunction and hepatic coma.

   　　It can be seen from in vivo animal experiments that serum cholesterols, triglycerides, and activities of GOT & GPT are decreased by electrolyzed reduced water for effective protection of subjects’ livers and gallbladders.

    

2. Resist leukemia:

   　　The paper, “Both electrolyzed reduced water and glutathione enhance and induce apoptosis of leukemia cells and damages of mitochondrions”, had been published in the medical journal in March 2009 (Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, 2009, 73, 280-287).

   　　The research findings present that electrolyzed reduced water (HC-ERW) contributes to the capability of glutathione (GSH) inducing apoptosis of leukemia cells (HL-60) by enhanced Bax proteins and abated Bc1-2 proteins for actions of the dependent pathway of mitochondrions. It can be seen from the research that electrolyzed reduced water (HC- ERW), an antioxidant produced by HC-1400, coordinated GSH to enhance and induce apoptosis of leukemia cells effectively.

    

3. Prevent nephrotoxicity and kidney injury induced by Cisplatin such as leukocytic infiltration, necrosis of renal cells, edema, and significantly increased serum creatinine and BUN.

　　In summary, the electrolyzed reductive water, which is characteristic of the controllable Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP) for constant output power in electrolysis and the specific pH value, is able to remove superoxide anions, hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide and enhance the capability of antioxidants to remove free radicals. Dr. Lu advocated the concept of “drinking more water, good water and healthy water”! “People who drink electrolyzed reduced water produced by the water generator which detects water flows and changes in water quality will keep in good health and prevent illness”, said Dr. Lu, professor of CSMU.
